Background of the study:
Iodine deficiency remains a critical nutritional concern with direct implications for thyroid function and related physical traits. In Oron, limited access to iodine-rich foods has resulted in a higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among residents. Thyroid hormones play an essential role in regulating metabolism, growth, and development (Ndukwe, 2023). Recent research indicates that inadequate iodine intake can lead to hypothyroidism and physical manifestations such as goiter, weight gain, and developmental delays (Mbanefo, 2024). These conditions not only affect individual health but also impose a significant burden on public health systems. The interplay between nutritional deficiency and thyroid health is complex, involving factors such as socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and regional food availability (Okoro, 2025). This study intends to explore the association between iodine deficiency and thyroid-related physical traits, thereby contributing to improved nutritional interventions and health policies aimed at mitigating iodine deficiency disorders in Oron.
Statement of the problem:
Iodine deficiency in Oron has led to observable thyroid-related disorders, yet there is insufficient research linking deficiency levels with specific physical traits. The absence of targeted nutritional interventions, based on local dietary patterns and thyroid health assessments, hinders effective management of these conditions. This study seeks to clarify the extent of thyroid dysfunction attributable to iodine deficiency and guide public health strategies.

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the study:
This study will inform public health policies by establishing the link between iodine deficiency and thyroid-related disorders. The findings will support the development of targeted nutritional programs and preventive measures in Oron (Ndukwe, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to evaluating the effects of iodine deficiency on thyroid-related physical traits among residents of Oron Local Government Area. Broader nutritional deficiencies are not examined.
